Adelaide Festival Writers' Week Kids' Weekend with Nest Studio
We had another gorgeous weekend with the amazing and inspiring folk from Adelaide Writers Week. We absolutely love hosting the children's art and visual literacy activities in the Pioneer Women's Memorial Garden each year. We have been lucky enough to have four years in a row of glorious weather, perfect for picnics, stories, parades and printing, lots of printing.
Here are just a few of the life drawing and paintings created by the children in the studio over the past couple of weeks.
The Studio will be closed. Instead, come and join us at the Pioneer Women's Memorial Garden on February 28 - March 1 for a weekend filled with picture books and art making!
Nest Studio is very proud to have been invited back to the Adelaide Festival's Writers' Week Kids' Weekend for our fourth year running. For those of you who have not been, I highly recommend you carve out a couple of hours next weekend to join us in the park (just opposite the Festival Centre in the Rose Garden).
What a beautiful evening. Thank you to all the families who popped into the studio Thursday night to help us celebrate the opening of the SALA Festival and the children's sculpture exhibition 'Wondrous Light'.
I also want to thank Bennetts, in particular John Bennett and his caring staff. With out their support and respect for the children's fragile little pieces we would have no exhibition. At the last hour John made the time (and space) to squeeze the children's sculptures into the kiln for their second glaze firing in order that they were ready for Thursady night. Thank you John. If you ever need a garden pot make sure you visit Bennetts Magill Potteries, a wonderful South Australian family business (since 1887 no less)
And of course what would SALA opening night be with out Christopher Koto and his beautiful voice. Thank you Chris for creating such a magical atmosphere. You can see Christopher play here and here.
And now for a sneak peak at the gorgeous books that were professionaly bound, 64 children's art pieces were chosen for the final 4 books. Over the coming month The Adelaide Festival Writers Week team will be preparing one of the books for viewing online... so stay tuned. In the meantime if you pop over to Nest Studio (B&M) we have one copy on display.
I am very proud to announce that one of the final bound books is being posted to Claudia Boldt - the wonderfuly hilarious and talented writer/illustrator of the original book UUGGHH! Claudia kindly gave us permission to re-illustrate her book for the festival. Thanks Claudia!
Please do pop over to our instagram and facebook pages for more photos of the glorious weekend.
Letterpress Posters - I think this one was my favourite for the weekend, purely for the cheekyness of choosing SUPERCALIFRAGILISTICEXPIALIDOCIOUS as the one word you were aloud to choose for your poster.
Now held over two massive days, children can participate in favourites like watercolour painting, storytime, the huge memory game as well as poster printing using the age old letterpress and sreenprinting techniques.
This year we have introduced a new project to the mix, Book Publishing. The hilarious and talented writer illustrator Claudia Boldt (UK) has ever so kindly given the Writers Week Kids Day children the OK to re-illustrate and re-publish her book UUGGHH! we will be using my favourite Faux Lino technique to print on our antique etching press.
So please do join us, we're going to have so much fun.
These are of a handful of the sculptured pots the children created in Term2 for the SALA Festival. The children's exhibiiton opening was another gorgeous magical night ... thanks to Christopher and his beautiful voice, excited happy children and of course their sweet pots.
At Nest Studio we believe nurturing your child's innate creativity is highly valuable and worthwhile.

After classes on Saturday my Olive and Chris came to the studio to help set up for this beautiful exhibition of children's art. Every year we host a Mother's Day exhibition showcasing the paintings our students created during their 10 week term over February, March and April.
This year the children really focused on their colour making skills and as you can see it has made for a stunning collection of artworks.
Thank you to all of the families who visited the studio on Mother's Day... we narrowly avoided the rain didn't we. We were able to enjoy the artworks in the light filled studio for the hour before children excitedly prized their painting off the wall ready to give to Mum or maybe hang in their own room.
I know my girls were super excited to take theirs home and choose a place to hang them in our home ... something that has become somewhat of a tradition over the past few years.
We still have many of the artworks hanging in the studio if you wish to take a look, they are visable from the shop front window 24/7 .. or at least until children take them home over the coming week.
If you are interested in art classes for yourself or your child please email me for more details & bookings.
Fostering a love of art. Art classes are for children aged 3_13 years (+ teens & adults are now welcome!) and run with the school terms.... there is a visual literacy focus (we love children's books!) and each term we explore a different art form.
Art is much more than just a fun extra activity for kids. Art opens up a child's world and mind, and offers them the skills they need for a bright future.
This album gives you an idea of what the Nest Studio artroom looks like and with the permission of the students, I hope to display their artwork once in a while so that you can see what fun we get up to. The photos on display are dating from today right back to 2005.
If you are interested in enroling your child in Nest Studio art classes for children please send me an email to enquire about availability, then download the enrolment form.
